The Community Garden was established in 2009 to accommodate a Local Training Initiative Horticulture Level 5 Course. The students on the course were producing a lot of vegetables as part of their training and decided to sell excess produce to the public. The Kilmeedy Homegrown label was created as a micro business.

Each year with more thought from the coordinators and students it was decided that it would be more cost and time effective to set up a vegetable box scheme where customers would subscribe for a specific number of weeks at a cost and collect their veg boxes on Thursday’s in the village. This system worked very well.

The Local Training Initiative finished in November 2018 and with the help of volunteers and the local Community Employment Scheme- Glenquin Connello we are able to continue supplying our customers and the Vegetable Box Scheme which is thriving with customers in Dromcollogher, Newcastle West, Feenagh, Feohanagh and Kilmeedy.

At present we have 4 growers and a number of volunteers working the ¾ acre site in Kilmeedy with 2 large growing ploytunnels and a smaller propagation tunnel where up to 30 different varieties of fruit and vegetables are produced and are available when in season.
